Steve - Bass Player
Steve owned a guitar from the age of 9, and practised chords until he eventually jointly owned a record label (Octaves Music Co.) and also a licensed entertainment agency (Grayston & Yarrow Entertainments). He played rhythm guitar on numerous recording sessions and produced several tracks including one of Switzerland’s top recording artists (of the 80’s). Steve was the rhythm guitarist in the band ‘Tunnelvision’ - they released a record in the 80’s had a fair amount of success with radio air play and the college/university circuit. Tunnelvision was again a musical partnership with Mick Yarrow (who is currently 'Mick & Odie' on the circuit).
In 2015, after almost 30 years away from the music business, Steve decided to try and learn bass as chords were now difficult for his fingers after so long away from the guitar - and after playing along to tracks on the internet, he became bored and placed an internet advert for a guitarist willing to practise with him. Eventually after trying to work with several guitarists, he found Andrew Halling, and together with Steve’s son Brad - the band was formed.
He has many influences and likes many types of music. Although he doesn’t have a favourite bass player - his favourite bass track is ‘Sultans of Swing’ - he says, “The playing is simple and fits the track like a hand in a glove. I really cannot stand complexed playing that simply confuses the song - a driving beat is the real essence. I always play my own basic beat on numbers and rarely follow the recorded track - that suits some, but not the rebel in me.”
Steve re-recorded his 80's release in December 2016 and is recording many more original tracks soon.
Andrew - Rhythm/Lead Guitarist
With a few of his older brother's Telecasters in the house, Andrew knew a barre chord or two and joined a band with a fellow schoolmate when 16. This was fairly short-lived and despite decades of picking up the odd guitar, watching bands and a love of rock groups such as Yes and Rush, it looked like playing guitar again wasn't going to happen. Marriage, kids, photography and playing table-tennis took over.
But that yearning to play guitar again never left and a few chance happenings a few years ago came together. Selling some hifi speaker stands and a jokey comment, 'swop for that Les Paul on your wall' instead of the £100 agreed, led to collecting guitars, a few eBay bargains and ultimately many guitars on the walls. Coming across some guitar tuition software and an encouraging online community, Andrew was soon recording a few home efforts.
But still something was missing and a chance Google search for a local band led to Andrew meeting bassist Steve and his son Brad at the end of summer 2015. Getting on like a house on fire, 'Risky Notes' were born and grow from strength to strength with the current five piece band.
Brad - Drummer
Whilst at school Brad had the opportunity to learn to play drums in the music lesson, his development led him to play in the school band. His interest in drumming grew and he purchased an electronic drum kit (the neighbours were so thrilled) - and was encouraged by his elder brother who was already a drummer in widely known bands.
After leaving school, work commitment, marriage and children occupied much of his time - but when his Dad Steve (Bassist) said he was getting together with a guitarist to practise a few numbers, he offered to play drums for them and the rest is history. His strong percussive rhythm with Bassist Steve and Guitarist Andrew is the backbone of the band.
Dave - Main Lead Guitarist
Dave has been in the music business for many years. He has a degree in music and also owns and runs a recording/rehearsal studio and is a very proficient engineer. He is also a guitar tutor and plays bass in two other bands as well.
His playing fits like a hand-in-a-glove and he is now a valued member of the band.
Sarah - Vocalist
Having always wanted to be the singer in a band, Sarah used to practise singing along to recordings as a young girl. However, her realisations of actually becoming a singer were put on hold for work marriage, and bringing up her three girls. But when the band Risky Notes needed a vocalist and her husband Dave suggested Steve speak to her - she came along for a rehearsal session and instantly worked well with the band, picking up the songs very quickly and adding to the band’s overall sound.
Between Sarah, Steve & Brad - they produce some great melodic harmonies.
